Tracking the Meme

So, a few days ago, while on the CBLocals forum, I noticed an ongoing joke that I didn't quite understand. The joke was the line "do a barrel roll" used at fairly inappropriate times. Apparently the joke comes from the N64 version of Star Fox (I dunno what it was called, but it was likely "Star Fox 64"). Why this line was repeated often, I dunno. It wasn't really that great a game. And it came out quite a few years ago.

But the games not the important thing! Nor is the reasoning! The important thing is the awful, stupid excuse for a joke itself! This thing is world famous! People all over the net post the line do a barrel roll on forums and messageboards across the interweb, usually with a lame picture connected to it. This got me thinking...

If some schmuck can do this with friggin Star Fox, why cant I with something equally stupid?

Thus, I challenged myself to create the next great/annoying meme (the barrel roll thing is called a meme... other famous memes include "po-ta-toes" and "'pwned"). But what would my creation be? Would it be funny? Would it even be a joke? And what would my meme be posted to? Would it be a reaction? Who knew!

Then, I saw it - the answer to my meme-problem! It came from a line on Erin's blog which came from the movie Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby. From this came my meme:

So simple, yet so brilliant: I'm all jacked up on Mountain Dew. It practically created itself. But making the meme was only the first small step of my personal challenge. The bulk of it: to see how long it would take to spread this stupid thing around the world! Yes! An experiment!

I will be placing the meme on just a few select, high-traffic messageboards. I won't place it more than once on any forum (though I may talk about it, I won't post it more than once per forum). It is my hopes that the damn thing will be loved by all and go nuts all over the place! Will my dreams be fulfilled? Who's to say? So far it's on CBLocals (May 28) and PvP (May 29) with plans for a few more in the coming days. Will it take off? Who knows?

But seriously, how can it not?

I'll post periodically to let you know how things are progressing. Hopefully, within a week or so, that won't even be necessary.
